How a manuscript is handled
Peer-review model: single-blind, with double-blind review available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally assessed by two to three independent reviewers, and the decision is taken by a handling editor. The full process, including the appeal procedure, is set out in the peer-review policy.
Ethics approval
Manuscripts lacking the appropriate approvals are rejected irrespective of scientific merit.
- Human research: IRB or ethics-committee approval, an informed-consent statement, and trial registration where applicable, following the Declaration of Helsinki and ICMJE.
- Animal research: IACUC or equivalent approval and compliance with national legislation, following the ARRIVE guidelines.
- Genetic and biosafety work: biosafety-committee approval, a stated containment level, and dual-use disclosure.
Data and materials
A data-availability statement is mandatory for every research article.
- Omics data deposited in GEO, SRA, ArrayExpress, PRIDE or MetaboLights, with the accession cited in the manuscript.
- Structural data deposited in the PDB, EMDB or BMRB before publication.
- Code and algorithms shared through GitHub, Zenodo or an institutional repository with a DOI.
- Materials made available through Addgene, ATCC or a material-transfer agreement.
Integrity and the published record

Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally assessed by two to three independent reviewers, and the decision is taken by a handling editor.
