The importance and need for this special issue:

Cardiometabolic diseases are major public health problems worldwide. All federations and organisations working for the health and well-being of populations agree on the scientific evidence that these diseases are increasing rapidly all over the world. Substantial progress has been made in research to prevent their development, reduce their progression or associated complications. Cardiometabolic diseases are multifactorial diseases where both environmental and genetic factors contribute to an increased risk of developing them. Solutions can be identified in both fields. Since genetic inheritance is acquired, "non-modifiable and definitive", it is, therefore, a good idea to act on other factors that can be modified and in this logic, it is now known and demonstrated that regular physical activity and a balanced diet help to be in good health and that a loss of body mass in obese people considerably reduces other risk factors and improves blood pressure or lipid profile.

In Cameroon, a recent nutritional education programme implemented by the NGO RSD Institute has shown that by intensifying the preventive approach to the fight against these diseases in adolescents, it is possible to positively influence behavioural change and therefore reduce their progression. Thus, in addition to physical exercise programmes, blood sugar monitoring and a balanced diet, the number of classes of drugs available to treat or reduce the associated complications has increased considerably over the past decades. In tandem with all of the above, a considerable number of available studies have explored and identified several susceptibility genes for these diseases and associated phenotypes.

To date, family-based linkage analyses and targeted studies on candidate genes, and large-scale surveys of association between common DNA sequence variants and disease have contributed to the accumulation of a number of data. It, therefore, becomes imperative to promote such studies in order to accumulate sufficient data that will allow, in combination with the evidence found for environmental factors, the development of a preventive approach to these diseases and personalised care. This special collection will bring together all studies related to the search for predisposition genes for cardio-metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension and all associated phenotypes. It will also bring together all studies developing strategies based on genetic inheritance and genetic variants in the design and implementation of personalised medicine.

The importance and need for this special issue:

Welcomes submissions to the thematic concept on 'Molecular Biology/Genetics and Biotechnology in cardio-metabolic diseases'. This proposed special issue entitles Molecular Biology/Genetics and Biotechnology in cardio-metabolic diseases will gather all studies related to the comprehension of physiopathology and/or pathophysiology, complications and all other aspects of these cardio-metabolic disorders by using genetic approach, molecular biology and biotechnology tools.

About this special issue theme, based on the fact that it is known that there are hundreds of genetic factors contributing significantly to the development of these conditions, added to the fact that the number of people living with type 2 diabetes, obesity or other chronic conditions has dramatically increased during these last decades despite considerable efforts in fundamental and clinical research. This theme is therefore highlighted here to attract the attention of researchers and ask them to focus a little more on these aspects for a better view, and a better understanding of these diseases because it becomes obvious that the uniqueness of each individual must be taken into account in the prevention or management of these diseases. Hence the need for such a theme that will gather and present the data generated by the use of genetic and molecular biology techniques, and in particular biotechnology.
