Before you submit

Two checks save the most time. Both are answered on pages of their own.

Is the manuscript in scope?

The manuscript should make a substantive contribution to tropical disease or tropical medical practice. Aims and Scope defines the journal's domains. Its first two fit questions assess subject eligibility; the third supports manuscript preparation. Editorial decisions also consider scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

What to prepare

Title page

Title, all authors with affiliations and ORCID iDs, the corresponding author's contact details, and the funding and competing-interest statements. Kept as a separate file so the manuscript can be sent to reviewers without it.

Manuscript

Abstract, keywords, main text, references, and tables and figure legends. Pages and lines numbered.

Figures

One file per figure at publication resolution. Micrographs carry a scale bar and the stain and magnification; maps carry a scale and the projection.

Supplementary files

Material that supports the article but is not needed to read it, each with a title and a legend.

Approvals

Ethics approval, consent documentation, collection or field permissions, and any material-transfer agreement, where the study involves them.

For double-blind review

For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.

What you will be asked to declare

• That the work is original, is not published elsewhere and is not under consideration elsewhere, and that any preprint or conference abstract is disclosed with its identifier.
• That every listed author meets the authorship criteria and has approved the submission.
• Ethics approval with its reference, and documented informed consent, where the study involves people — with the community and administrative permissions where it works at community level.
• Written consent to publish, for a case report or any identifiable image or detail.
• Trial registration. Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
• The provenance of clinical specimens, isolates or field-collected vectors, the permissions under which they were obtained, and the containment under which they were handled.
• A data-availability statement. Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
• Funding, including each funder's role in design, analysis and the decision to publish.
• Competing interests for every author, whether or not any exist.
• Any use of an AI tool in preparing the manuscript or in the research, described so a reader knows what it did.

What happens next

Editorial screening

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. A manuscript outside scope is returned promptly so it can be sent elsewhere without waiting through a review that could not succeed.

Peer review

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Decision

The handling editor takes the decision on the reviewers' assessments. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

Revision

Where revision is invited, the reviewers' points are sent in full and a point-by-point response is expected with the revised manuscript.

Acceptance and charges

The article processing charge falls due only after acceptance. There is no submission fee and no charge during peer review. Terms are on Article processing charges.

Production and publication

The article is copy-edited and typeset, proofs are sent for approval, and it is published open access under CC BY 4.0 with the authors retaining copyright. It appears in the current issue and stays permanently in the archive.
