Indexing and Discovery

What the categories mean

The journal distinguishes DOI registration, metadata harvesting, discovery services, selective indexing and digital preservation by their respective roles.

DOI registration

Crossref assigns persistent article identifiers and receives the associated metadata from participating publishers.

Metadata harvesting

An OAI-PMH endpoint that lets aggregators collect article metadata automatically.

Discovery services

Services such as Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, BASE and CORE collect content through automated crawling or metadata harvesting according to their inclusion and technical criteria.

Selective journal-level indexing

Services such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase and DOAJ evaluate journals through their respective selection processes.

Digital preservation

Portico preserves deposited journal content for long-term access.

Current access and discovery

JTMH publishes articles with immediate open access, supporting discovery through crawlers and metadata harvesters. Selective journal indexes apply their own assessment and inclusion criteria.

The journal's published record is on the Archive, and the current issue lists what has most recently appeared.

Deposit in PubMed Central

Eligible NIH-funded manuscripts may be deposited individually in PubMed Central through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS).

Digital preservation

This journal’s content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA (the organization behind JSTOR). As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish.

Metadata the journal maintains

Complete article metadata supports reliable discovery and citation. For every article the journal records and maintains:

• Title, author names in the order the article carries them, and author affiliations.
• Abstract and author keywords.
• Article type, volume, issue, pagination and publication date.
• The license under which the article is published, and the copyright holder.
• Funding statements and competing-interest declarations as supplied by the authors.
• A stable article address for persistent access across presentation updates.

Authors can improve how their work is found by using a precise title, accurate keywords and a complete funding statement. These are captured in the metadata and are what a discovery service reads.
