Overview
The human body is the complete physical structure of a human being, organised into cells, tissues, organs and interconnected organ systems, including the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, musculoskeletal, endocrine and immune systems. These systems work together to sustain life and maintain homeostasis, the stable internal conditions the body needs to function. Scientific research continually investigates how the body's systems are built, how they communicate and regulate one another, and how their disruption leads to disease. Reflecting the broad scientific scope of this journal and its companion titles, related research has examined the body's systems and how they function and fail. Studies include an analysis of why human body systems can enter catastrophic failure leading to disease, an account of the physiology of adipose tissue and its relevance to obesity, and a review of non-invasive techniques for measuring blood glucose. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the human body, including the structure, physiology and integrated function of its organ systems and the ways researchers study health and disease at the level of the whole organism.
