Overview
Marine biotechnology is the application of scientific tools and techniques to marine organisms and their biological processes in order to develop useful products and solutions. It draws on the genetic, chemical, and metabolic diversity of organisms from the ocean, such as algae, bacteria, fungi, invertebrates, and fish, to produce pharmaceuticals, enzymes, bioactive compounds, biomaterials, and food, and to support sustainable aquaculture. Because marine environments host life adapted to extreme conditions of salinity, pressure, and temperature, they are a source of novel molecules and capabilities not found on land. As a field, marine biotechnology spans bioprospecting for new compounds, the cultivation and engineering of marine microorganisms, and the use of biotechnological methods to address challenges such as pollution and food security. These activities fall within the journal's biotechnology and biomedical-science scope, where the development and characterisation of bioprocesses and bio-products are central concerns. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to marine biotechnology, supporting researchers, biotechnologists, and students interested in harnessing marine biological resources for biomedical, industrial, and environmental applications.
