Overview

Bioremediation is the use of living organisms, chiefly bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants, to break down, transform, or remove pollutants from contaminated soil, water, and air. It harnesses the natural metabolic capabilities of microorganisms to degrade harmful substances such as petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial chemicals into less toxic or inert forms. As a comparatively low-cost and environmentally sustainable alternative to physical and chemical cleanup methods, bioremediation can be carried out in place at a contaminated site or in engineered systems, and it may rely on naturally occurring organisms, introduced strains, or amendments that stimulate microbial activity. Enzymes such as laccases and processes including biosorption and biodegradation are central tools in this field. Research in Biotechnology and Biomedical Science engages directly with these approaches; work in the journal's record includes studies of bioremediation to reduce pesticide pollution on agricultural land, the biosorption of lead using Bacillus subtilis, the biodegradation of organophosphate pesticides such as methyl parathion and malathion using Pseudomonas stutzeri, the optimization and purification of laccase enzyme from Bacillus, and the biotechnological application of cyanobacteria in agriculture, medicine, and the environment. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to bioremediation and microbial environmental cleanup.
