Overview

Physiology is the branch of biology concerned with the normal functions of living organisms and their constituent parts, examining the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms by which cells, tissues, organs, and systems sustain life and maintain homeostasis. It investigates how organ systems, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular, endocrine, renal, and nervous systems, operate and integrate to regulate variables such as blood pressure, gas exchange, metabolism, and the internal milieu in response to internal and external demands. Sub-disciplines include comparative and exercise physiology, cardiovascular and reproductive physiology, neurophysiology, and cellular and molecular physiology, with methods spanning whole-organism measurement, functional and recovery studies, and biochemical and molecular analysis of regulatory processes. Recurrent themes are adaptation to physiological stress, the dose-dependent modulation of bodily function, and the physiological basis underlying clinical and applied sciences. Research grounded in this area examines single-ventricle physiology and nutritional status, the physiology of adipose tissue in relation to obesity, comparative exercise physiology, modes of muscular contraction, cardiac physiology across the female reproductive lifespan, recovery interventions in sport, the biochemical basis of controlled breathing, and the significance of basic physiological sciences for clinical study. The journal publishes peer-reviewed zoological and biomedical research on physiological function across species and systems, connecting mechanistic understanding of normal function to health, performance, and disease.
