Overview
Obstetric management of high-risk pregnancies is the specialised care of pregnancies that carry an increased likelihood of complications for the mother, the baby or both. Risk may arise from factors such as advanced maternal age, pre-existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension, multiple gestation, placental abnormalities or a history of previous complications. Management involves closer monitoring, coordinated care, timely intervention and preparedness for obstetric emergencies, with the aim of improving outcomes through careful planning and skilled clinical response. Reflecting the Women's Reproductive Health focus of this journal and its companion titles, related research has addressed the care of complicated pregnancies and the skills needed to manage them. Studies include the management of placenta previa in women with a history of previous caesarean delivery, a recognised high-risk obstetric situation, and work on improving confidence in obstetric skills through basic and advanced life support in obstetrics training. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the obstetric management of high-risk pregnancies, including the identification, monitoring and clinical handling of pregnancies at increased risk of adverse outcomes.
