Overview

The human reproductive system comprises the organs and tissues responsible for producing gametes, supporting fertilization, and, in females, sustaining pregnancy and childbirth. The female system includes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina, and operates under cyclical control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, which orchestrates ovulation, the menstrual cycle, and the endocrine support of gestation. The male system comprises the testes, epididymis, vas deferens, accessory glands, and penis, producing and delivering sperm. Together these systems integrate anatomical structure, gametogenesis, and hormonal signalling to enable reproduction. This topic addresses both the physiology of reproduction and the determinants of reproductive health across the life course. Relevant work examines preconception care among women of reproductive age, the estrogenic responsiveness of reproductive tissues, and the broader question of how integrated body systems sustain or lose function in disease. Related research considers access to and barriers within sexual and reproductive healthcare for marginalized groups, the advancement of reproductive rights, the clinical care of survivors of sexual assault, and the impact of menopausal transition on health and daily functioning. By spanning anatomy, endocrine regulation, and health services, this topic frames reproduction as both a biological process and a focus of preventive and clinical care.
