Overview
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also termed myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID), is a complex, debilitating condition defined by profound, persistent fatigue lasting at least six months that is not relieved by rest and is accompanied by post-exertional malaise, unrefreshing sleep, cognitive impairment, and often pain. Its etiology remains incompletely understood and is thought to involve interacting immunological, neuroendocrine, autonomic, and infectious factors, with symptom overlap across multiple body systems complicating diagnosis, which rests on clinical criteria and exclusion of alternative causes. Research relevant to the condition examines chronic stress and its biological correlates, oxidative and inflammatory mechanisms, chronic pain and pain-related cytokine modulation through interventions such as auricular vagus nerve stimulation, and infectious contributors including tick-borne illness. The interplay of fatigue with mood, sleep, and immune dysregulation situates CFS within a broader landscape of chronic, multisystem illness in which energy metabolism, neuroimmune signaling, and stress physiology are central. Because the condition affects daily functioning and quality of life across affected populations, management is typically supportive and multidisciplinary. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical and mechanistic studies and reviews addressing chronic fatigue, chronic pain, stress physiology, and the immunological and neuroendocrine factors implicated in persistent, multisystem fatigue.
