Overview

The respiratory system of animals is an essential bodily system that is responsible for taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide. Animals rely on their respiratory system to supply oxygen-rich air to their cells so that they can use it for both energy production, as well as the removal of waste products from their bodies. Without a functional respiratory system, animals would be unable to survive. The respiratory system of animals is composed of a network of tubes, organs and muscles that together, allow for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The respiratory system is also responsible for creating the pressure gradient which helps to regulate the flow of air in and out of the body. By regulating the amount of oxygen present in the body, the respiratory system helps animals to maintain homeostasis and stay healthy.
