Overview

Thrombocytopenia is a medical condition characterized by an abnormally low amount of platelets in the blood. Platelets are critical to the clotting of blood, so having too few leaves the individual more likely to suffer from excessive bleeding following an injury or medical procedure. Thrombocytopenia can result from various medical issues including bone marrow failure, drug side-effects, cancer, or autoimmune diseases. Diagnostic studies such as a complete blood count and bone marrow biopsy can help identify thrombocytopenia. Treatment of thrombocytopenia depends on the underlying cause and may include medications, blood transfusions, or bone marrow transplant. It is important to have thrombocytopenia diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding and other potential complications.
