Overview
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, addressing their structure, genetics, metabolism, ecology, and interactions with hosts and environments. It provides the empirical foundation for understanding how microbial populations behave, adapt, and cause disease, and it supplies the species-level data on which integrative analyses depend. Bacterial epidemiology is illustrated by surveys of typhoid and paratyphoid fever in hospital populations, while medical mycology features in antifungal susceptibility testing of Candida species isolated from patients and in the study of invasive infections such as intracranial aspergillosis. Antimicrobial resistance is a central concern, characterized through situational analyses of resistant organisms in defined populations and supported by laboratory biosafety practice and personal protective measures. Molecular detection extends the discipline beyond culture, as in the screening of residual antigen-test material to identify SARS-CoV-2 variants. Applied and food microbiology contribute through quantitative microbiological risk assessment used in process improvement and through investigations of yeast spoilage and antifungal essential oils. By generating quantitative data on growth, resistance, and host interaction, microbiology connects the biology of individual organisms to broader analyses of microbial communities, infection dynamics, and the control of disease across clinical, food, and environmental contexts.
