Overview
Gene expression analysis is the measurement and interpretation of which genes are transcribed and translated in a cell or tissue, and at what levels, to understand how genetic information is deployed under normal and altered conditions. By quantifying RNA and protein output, it links genotype to phenotype, revealing how cells respond to stimuli, how regulation differs between states, and how expression changes accompany disease. Techniques range from transcript profiling and quantitative assays to integrated proteomic and bioinformatic analysis, and results are used to identify mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets. Research in this area applies gene expression analysis to the mechanisms underlying acquired resistance to butyrate-induced apoptosis in colorectal cancer cells, and to the characterisation of anti-inflammatory activity in probiotic bacteria from fermented foods. Studies also examine expression changes associated with dietary intervention, epigenetic regulation in the context of nutrition, and immunogenomic approaches for monitoring cancer and infectious disease. Further work uses microfluidic and nucleic-acid technologies to detect disease-associated transcripts. By comparing expression across conditions and cell types, gene-expression analysis clarifies how regulated transcription shapes cellular behaviour, distinguishes normal from abnormal function, and supports the discovery of molecular signatures, forming a central tool in Systems Biology for connecting gene activity to health, disease, and response to treatment.
