Overview
Lipid metabolism is the set of biochemical processes by which the body synthesizes, transports, stores, and breaks down lipids such as fats, fatty acids, triglycerides, and cholesterol. These molecules serve as a major energy reserve, as structural components of cell membranes, and as precursors for signaling molecules and hormones. Through digestion, absorption, and pathways including the building of lipids (lipogenesis) and their breakdown for energy (lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation), the body maintains a balance between energy storage and use. Disturbances in lipid metabolism are linked to conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease, making it an important focus of biomedical and nutritional research. Within the journal's coverage of liver-related and metabolic research, related work includes studies on the effects of DHA and EPA on serum triglycerides, hypolipidemic effects of plant extracts compared with statins, lipid profiles in hypercholesterolemic models, atherosclerosis risk factors, and the physiology of adipose tissue in relation to obesity. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to lipid metabolism and its role in energy balance, cardiovascular health, and metabolic disease.
