Overview
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium common in the environment that causes serious infections in people with weakened immune systems, frequently affecting the respiratory tract and acting as a major cause of hospital-acquired infection. It is strongly associated with chronic lung conditions and is noted for its resistance to multiple antibiotics. In respiratory medicine, this organism is especially important as a cause of pneumonia and as a persistent coloniser of the airways in chronic conditions such as cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, where it drives recurrent exacerbations and progressive lung damage. Its ability to form biofilms in the airway and to evade both host defences and antibiotics makes these infections difficult to eradicate. Key research themes include antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, the development of new antibacterial agents, and the management of chronic airway infection. This journal publishes work touching on several of these aspects, including the impact of bronchiectasis on COPD exacerbations, situational analyses of antimicrobial resistance, the antibacterial activity of plant extracts and synthesised compounds, the alveolar macrophage proteome, and complications arising from infected implanted devices.
