Overview

Sexual and reproductive health is a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality and reproduction, encompassing the ability to have safe and satisfying sexual experiences, to access contraception and reproductive care, and to make informed decisions free of coercion. It spans the whole life course and includes the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, maternal and preconception care, and education about sexuality. As a public-health field, sexual and reproductive health combines clinical services, education, and the study of social and structural determinants of access. Research published by the journal gives substantial attention to adolescents, including parent-adolescent communication about sexual and reproductive health, levels of knowledge among school-enrolled youth, and the perceptions of teachers toward sexuality education across settings in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. Other studies examine teenage pregnancy and its contributing factors, the integration of traditional maternal and child healthcare with national health systems, and knowledge and practice of preconception care. Work on equity and access addresses barriers faced by marginalized groups, including lesbian and bisexual women and sex workers, alongside harm-reduction programs. Epidemiological research includes the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections measured through home-collected samples. Together these aspects reflect the field's emphasis on education, prevention, equitable access, and maternal and adolescent well-being.
