Overview

Protein function refers to the specific biochemical roles that proteins perform within cells and organisms, determined largely by their amino acid sequences and the three-dimensional structures into which they fold. Proteins are among the most versatile biological molecules, acting as enzymes that catalyze reactions, as structural components, as transporters and channels, as antibodies, as hormones and signaling molecules, and as regulators of gene expression and cell growth. Because a protein's shape governs how it binds to other molecules, even small changes in sequence or folding can alter or abolish function, with consequences for health and disease. Understanding protein function is central to Proteomics and Genomics Research, which seeks to catalog proteins, map their interactions, and connect molecular activity to physiology. Work published in this journal reflects these aims, including efforts to advance the Human Proteome Project and to apply bioinformatics tools to disease diagnosis and treatment, illustrating how large-scale proteomic data are organized and interpreted to understand what proteins do. Related research in the journal also examines how genetic variants and proteomic techniques inform diagnostics and personalized medicine. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to protein function and the broader study of proteomes and genomes.
