Overview
Primary prevention refers to measures taken to prevent the onset of disease or injury before it occurs, by reducing exposure to risk factors and promoting conditions that support health. It is distinguished from secondary prevention, which aims to detect and treat disease early, and tertiary prevention, which seeks to limit the impact of established illness. Primary prevention includes strategies such as health education, vaccination, lifestyle and behavioral change, and policies that address the social and environmental determinants of health. By acting upstream of disease, it offers a powerful means of improving population health and reducing the long-term burden on individuals and healthcare systems. Research relevant to this topic within Preventive Medicine And Care includes studies of behavioral risk reduction, such as factors influencing condom use among youth with implications for HIV interventions, psychosocial determinants of marijuana use among students, and predictors of sexual abstinence among adolescents. Additional work addresses mental health promotion for children and risk reduction interventions for in-school adolescents. These studies illustrate how preventive efforts often target health behaviors and risk factors during formative years. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the prevention of disease and the promotion of health.
