Overview
Aquaculture is the practice of cultivating aquatic organisms such as fish, mollusks, and algae, to produce food and other products. It is an important form of food production in many parts of the world, particularly in areas where arable land is limited or unavailable. Aquaculture is also used to restore degraded habitats and rehabilitate threatened or endangered species. Along with providing food and other products, aquaculture has the potential to create jobs and promote economic development in local communities. It can also play an important role in conserving natural resources, by helping to reduce the strain on wild fisheries and other wild aquatic stocks.
