Overview

Animal Breeding and Nutrition is the science of improving the health, productive characteristics, and quality of animals through selective breeding and nutrition. It plays a crucial role in modern livestock production and food production, with the aim of producing healthy, robust animals that produce a high-quality quantity of meat, wool, milk, eggs and other animal products. Animal Breeding and Nutrition is also used to maintain genetic diversity, reduce disease and increase animal welfare, as well as mitigate climate change through reducing the impact of methane production in ruminants. By understanding the genetics of animals, animal breeders are able to produce animals with desired qualities. Nutritionists, in turn, play a vital role in animal health and fertility, enabling animals to achieve their maximum physiological potential. Therefore, Animal Breeding and Nutrition is essential for the health and sustainability of all animal populations, both in the wild, and in domestic environments.
