Overview

Child development is the sequence of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional changes through which children grow and acquire capacities from infancy onward. It is shaped by the interplay of biological maturation and environmental influences, among which nutrition, caregiving, health services, and socioeconomic conditions are decisive, particularly in early childhood when growth trajectories and neurodevelopment are most sensitive. Anthropometric growth monitoring, including the detection of stunting and wasting, serves as a key indicator of developmental health, and micronutrient status, vitamin A adequacy, and feeding practices directly affect physical and cognitive outcomes. Research in this area examines determinants of stunted growth and micronutrient deficiency, complementary and exclusive breastfeeding practices, the management of severe acute malnutrition, and the role of caregivers in growth monitoring at health facilities. Studies also address contextual influences such as household economic status, the health impacts of computer use, child mortality determinants, and community-based mentoring schemes that support psychosocial development in school-aged children. Therapeutic and creative approaches, including music therapy within health services, illustrate the breadth of developmental support. By integrating nutritional status, caregiving, and health-system factors, the field informs strategies to protect growth and developmental potential.
