Overview

Parasites are organisms that live on or within a host organism of a different species and depend on it for nourishment, often at the host's expense. They are a major cause of disease in humans, animals, and plants, and the study of parasites and the illnesses they cause is the focus of parasitology. Parasites are broadly grouped into protozoa (single-celled organisms such as those causing malaria and intestinal infections), helminths (parasitic worms, including nematodes, cestodes, and trematodes), and ectoparasites that live on the body surface. They can be transmitted through contaminated food and water, soil, insect vectors, or contact with infected hosts, and their impact ranges from asymptomatic carriage to severe, sometimes fatal, disease. Understanding their prevalence, distribution, life cycles, and risk factors is essential for diagnosis, treatment, and control, particularly in regions where sanitation and veterinary resources are limited. Research published under this topic strongly reflects these concerns, including studies of helminth and gastrointestinal parasite prevalence in sheep, goats, and cattle; intestinal protozoan and helminth infections in schoolchildren and hospital populations; pigeons as potential reservoirs of human protozoan parasites; epidemiological surveys of intestinal parasitic infection; and evaluations of anthelmintic and anti-coccidial treatments, illustrating both the veterinary and public-health dimensions of parasitic disease.
