Overview
The neck is the anatomical region connecting the head to the trunk, a compact and complex structure housing the cervical spine, the airway and oesophagus, major blood vessels, nerves, the larynx, the thyroid and parathyroid glands, and numerous lymph nodes arranged in defined cervical levels. Organized into fascial compartments and triangles, it transmits vital structures between the head and thorax and is integral to breathing, swallowing, phonation, and the support and movement of the head. The neck is clinically important as a site of infection, congenital and vascular anomalies, lymphatic spread of malignancy, and primary tumours, and the evaluation of a neck mass is a common diagnostic challenge in otolaryngology. Research relevant to this area examines head and neck cancer and its epigenetic and molecular biomarkers, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder presenting with head and neck manifestations, and neck masses such as internal jugular phlebectasia in children. Further work addresses musculoskeletal neck and shoulder pain, cervical medial branch blocks in the diagnosis of somatosensory tinnitus, tobacco- and alcohol-associated head and neck cancer, and tumours arising in unusual cervical locations. The field spans otolaryngology, head and neck oncology, and surgery. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to the neck, including head and neck cancer, cervical masses, and disorders of the structures of the neck.
