Overview

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a chemical messenger that nerve cells use to communicate, and it plays a central role in the brain's control of movement, motivation, reward, mood, and learning. Released by specific groups of neurons, dopamine transmits signals across the synapses between nerve cells and influences a wide range of functions, from the coordination of voluntary movement to the experience of pleasure and the reinforcement of behavior. Disturbances in dopamine signaling are implicated in many neurological and psychiatric conditions: the loss of dopamine-producing neurons underlies the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease, while alterations in dopamine pathways are associated with addiction, mood disorders, and other conditions. Because of its broad influence, dopamine is a major focus of neuroscience and a target for numerous therapies. Research relevant to this topic in Neurological Research and Therapy and affiliated titles includes work on impulse control disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease, the interaction of nociceptin/orphanin FQ with dopamine and serotonin activity in the substantia nigra, and the effect of medical therapy in Parkinson's disease, reflecting the journal's coverage of dopamine systems and movement disorders. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to dopamine and its role in neurological function and disease.
