Overview
Cerebrovascular diseases are a group of conditions affecting the blood vessels that supply the brain. They include stroke, transient ischemic attack, and other disorders in which blood flow to brain tissue is reduced, interrupted, or compromised by narrowing, blockage, or rupture of cerebral and carotid arteries. Because the brain depends on continuous blood supply, these diseases can produce neurological symptoms ranging from weakness and sensory loss to impaired speech and cognition, and they are a major cause of disability worldwide. Research in the Journal of Neurological Research and Therapy examines several aspects of cerebrovascular function and disease. One study assesses endothelial function across stroke subtypes using specialized vascular technology, while another investigates brain hemodynamics and cerebrovascular reactivity in patients with tension-type headache. Related work analyzes plasma homocysteine levels and carotid intima-media thickness, a marker of vascular health, in a neurological patient population. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access articles gather evidence relevant to cerebrovascular disease, including the vascular and endothelial factors that influence blood flow to the brain and the conditions that arise when it is disrupted.
