Overview

Tension-type headaches are the most common types of headaches, and are characterized by a dull, aching pain in the head, neck, and/or face. These headaches are often caused by stress, muscle tension, eye strain, bad posture, or medications. Treatment usually involves relaxation, massage, physical therapy, stress reduction techniques, and over-the-counter medication. In more severe cases, prescription medications such as muscle relaxers, antidepressants, or anticonvulsants may be prescribed. Tension-type headaches can be a nuisance, but they are typically not serious and can often be managed with lifestyle changes and medication.
