Overview
Migraine with brainstem aura, formerly known as basilar-type migraine, is a rare form of migraine headache involving neurological symptoms. It can cause severe head pain as well as symptoms such as visual disturbances, dizziness, hearing loss, speech difficulties, and other neurological symptoms. The cause of migraine with brainstem aura is not known, but it is thought to be related to a disruption in the communication network of neurons located in the brainstem. Diagnostic tests and imaging studies can be used to help diagnose migraine with brainstem aura. Treatment consists of preventive medications and medications to stop the migraine attacks when they occur. This form of migraine, though rare, can be disabling and require special treatment and attention.
