Cluster headaches are intense and debilitating headaches, usually on one side of the head. They are also known as suicide headaches, because of the intense, piercing pain they can cause. Cluster headaches typically occur in clusters, with multiple headaches that last from 15 minutes to three hours, and can occur several times a week. They are most common in men, though they can affect anyone. Treatment options including medications, such as oxygen therapy and sumatriptan injections, as well as lifestyle modifications, such as reducing stress and avoiding triggers. Cluster headaches are important to recognize, as they can have a serious impact on quality of life, and prompt treatment is necessary to reduce their severity.
