Overview
Dementia is a clinical syndrome of acquired, progressive decline in cognition severe enough to interfere with independent daily function, encompassing impairments in Memory, language, reasoning, orientation, and judgement. It is not a single disease but the shared endpoint of several underlying pathologies, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular disease, Lewy body disease, and frontotemporal degeneration, which differ in their molecular substrates and clinical course. Beyond cognitive loss, dementia frequently involves behavioural and psychological symptoms such as depression, agitation, aggression, apathy, and disrupted sleep, which drive much of the associated distress and caregiving burden. Research in this area examines the differentiation of depression and apathy from cognitive decline, the relationship between early stressful life events, depression, and later dementia, and dynamic network analyses of functional brain connectivity. A substantial focus falls on non-pharmacological and behavioural interventions, including cognitive stimulation, behaviour management, virtual reality, and videophone-mediated communication, as well as approaches to disrupted sleep and to aggression and agitation. Work also addresses caregiver knowledge and the distinction between genuine gaps and misconceptions. The condition is a growing public health priority. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on dementia, including its neurobiology, comorbid depression, and non-pharmacological management strategies.
