What the board does
The editorial board decides what the journal publishes. Its members read a submission against the journal’s stated scope, identify and weigh the independent reviewers whose judgment the decision will rest on, and take the decision that follows their reports.
IJSTD is scoped to the infection rather than to a method or a discipline, and the board is assembled the same way. It holds laboratory medicine and molecular detection, pathology and cytology, dermatology, internal medicine and clinical immunology, community-engaged prevention research, and public-health epidemiology. A manuscript is directed to the member whose own published work is nearest to its subject.
The directory lists each member’s role, affiliation, country, research interests and individual journal profile. Available ORCID identifiers link to the public registry.

How editorial decisions are governed
The terms below are the journal’s, stated here in the words its own policies use. They are summarized, not replaced: the editorial policies page carries each of them in full, together with the ethics, consent, authorship and data-availability requirements that apply to authors.
- Screening
- All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
- Peer review
- Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- Decision criteria
- Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
- Editorial independence
- Editorial decision-making is kept separate from the journal’s business operations, and advertising, sponsorship and membership arrangements do not influence content decisions.
- Competing interests
- An editor with a potential competing interest in a manuscript recuses themselves from handling it, and the manuscript passes to an editor who has none.
- A manuscript an editor has written
- Authorship is a competing interest, so the same rule governs it: a board member who is an author on a submission takes no part in its handling, in the choice of its reviewers, or in the decision on it.
- Board members as reviewers
- Board members who take part in peer review follow the same guidelines as external reviewers, with additional disclosure requirements.
- Research integrity
- Suspected research misconduct is investigated following the guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics, and may lead to rejection, correction, retraction or notification of the authors’ institution.
05 · Participation
Joining the board
IJSTD welcomes expressions of interest from researchers and clinicians who publish in the fields it covers, and it is particularly interested in hearing from clinicians and trialists working on treatment regimens, comparative effectiveness and the management of drug-resistant infection — the journal’s second research domain.
A record of published work in the subject and a public identifier that a reader can open are what an application is assessed on. The guidelines for editors set out what the role involves.
