Overview

Pollution is the introduction of contaminants or energy into the natural environment at concentrations that cause adverse effects on ecosystems, organisms, and human health. It is conventionally classified by the receiving medium into air, water, and soil pollution, and by the nature of the contaminant into particulate matter, heavy metals, pesticides and other agrochemicals, and plastics. Sources range from combustion and industrial emissions to agricultural runoff, mining, and waste disposal, with pollutants moving through air, water, and trophic pathways and accumulating in sediments and tissues. Detection and assessment rely on chemical monitoring and on biomonitoring, in which sentinel or bioindicator organisms register exposure and ecological stress, while ecotoxicology quantifies dose-response relationships and sublethal harm. Remediation spans physical, chemical, and biological methods, including bioremediation that uses microorganisms or plants to degrade or sequester contaminants. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across these themes. Representative work addresses fine and ultrafine particulate air pollution and respiratory exposure, heavy-metal contamination of soils, pesticide impacts on aquatic and terrestrial fauna, and the use of freshwater bivalves and insect larvae as aquatic bioindicators, alongside agricultural land-use effects on water quality and plastic-waste impacts. Together these studies illustrate how pollution is measured, traced through ecosystems, and mitigated.
