Overview

Neurovascular refers to the interface and functional relationship between the nervous system and the vasculature, encompassing both the anatomical neurovascular bundles in which nerves travel alongside arteries and veins through tissues and the physiological coupling that matches local blood flow to neuronal activity. In the periphery, neurovascular bundles deliver innervation and perfusion together to organs and limbs and are important landmarks in anatomy and surgery. In the central nervous system, the concept centers on the neurovascular unit, the integrated assembly of neurons, astrocytes, pericytes, and endothelial cells that constitutes the blood-brain barrier and mediates neurovascular coupling, the process by which neuronal signaling, through astrocytic and metabolic mediators, regulates cerebral blood flow to meet metabolic demand. Disruption of neurovascular coupling and barrier integrity is implicated in cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative disease. The subject matter examined in this area includes astrocyte-targeted regulation of brain blood flow and the role of N-acetylaspartylglutamate, comparative anatomy of mandibular neurovascular canals, neurovascular reactivity in multiple sclerosis, the branching pattern of neurovascular bundles in the foot, detection of brain regions involved in extreme physiological challenge, and peripheral neuropathy models. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to neurovascular anatomy, coupling, and pathology.
