Overview

Thoracic pertains to the thorax, the chest region of the body bounded by the rib cage, sternum, thoracic vertebrae, and diaphragm, which encloses the thoracic cavity and its principal organs, the heart and great vessels within the mediastinum, the lungs and pleurae, the trachea and esophagus, and associated nerves and lymphatics. Thoracic anatomy and medicine address the structures and disorders of this region, spanning the chest wall and its congenital deformities such as pectus excavatum, the pleural space and mediastinum, the thoracic aorta and its aneurysmal and dissection pathology, and the cardiopulmonary organs. Thoracic surgery and procedures encompass interventions on the lungs, heart, chest wall, and mediastinal structures, including transplantation and pericardial access, while thoracic spine pathology and intramedullary lesions fall within the same anatomical domain. Diagnosis relies heavily on cross-sectional imaging such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The subject matter touching this area in the surrounding literature includes thoracic spinal cord lesions, pericardiocentesis and its anatomical approaches, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, chest-wall prostheses for pectus excavatum and Poland syndrome, post-mastectomy chest-wall pain, and chronic pain after lung transplantation. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to thoracic structure, disease, and intervention.
