Overview
The retina is the light-sensitive neural tissue lining the inner posterior surface of the eye, where photoreceptors transduce light into electrical signals that are processed by interneurons and ganglion cells and conveyed via the optic nerve to the brain for visual perception. Its layered architecture supports phototransduction, spatial and motion processing, and color and luminance discrimination, and specialized regions such as the macula mediate high-acuity central vision. Because the retina is metabolically demanding and dependent on intact vascular supply and supporting glia such as Müller cells, it is vulnerable to ischemic, inflammatory, degenerative, and mechanical insults, and retinal imaging is also being explored as a window onto systemic and neurodegenerative disease. Research relevant to this topic, situated in ophthalmology, includes the effect of transiently raised intraocular pressure on retinal function and ganglion cell survival, phytochemical strategies for age-related macular degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity screening, optical coherence tomography in choroiditis and in early detection of Alzheimer's disease, vitreous hemorrhage and focal photocoagulation in diabetic retinopathy, Müller-cell protein expression and substrate stiffness, and retinal vascular occlusions. Methods include clinical imaging, case series, animal models, and laboratory studies. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on retinal structure, function, disease, and imaging.
