The retina is the light-sensitive neural tissue lining the inner posterior surface of the eye, where photoreceptors transduce light into electrical signals that are processed by interneurons and ganglion cells and conveyed via the optic nerve to the brain for visual perception. Its layered architecture supports phototransduction, spatial and motion processing, and color and luminance discrimination, and specialized regions such as the macula mediate high-acuity central vision. Because the retina is metabolically demanding and dependent on intact vascular supply and supporting glia such as Müller cells, it is vulnerable to ischemic, inflammatory, degenerative, and mechanical insults, and retinal imaging is also being explored as a window onto systemic and neurodegenerative disease.
