Overview

Appetite is the physiological and psychological drive to seek and consume food, distinct from hunger in that it incorporates hedonic, sensory, and learned influences alongside homeostatic energy needs. Its regulation depends on the integration of peripheral and central signals: gut-derived hormones such as ghrelin, which stimulates intake, and the satiety signals cholecystokinin, peptide YY, and glucagon-like peptide-1, together with the adipose hormone leptin and circulating nutrients, are integrated by hypothalamic and brainstem circuits that balance orexigenic and anorexigenic pathways. Reward systems, taste perception, food palatability and energy density, and environmental and psychological cues further modulate eating behavior, and dysregulation of these systems contributes to overeating, obesity, and disordered eating. Understanding appetite control informs dietary strategies that promote satiety and moderate energy intake. The subject matter examined in this area includes non-caloric sweeteners in type 2 diabetes, dietary diversity and nutritional status, feeding practices, nutrition-microbiota relationships, and endocrine influences such as thyroid-hormone effects on obesity. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to eating behavior, appetite regulation, and the dietary and physiological factors that influence food intake.
