Overview

Cytokines are small proteins released by cells of the immune system that can act as either stimulators or inhibitors of cell growth, development, and function. They play an important role in the development and progression of cancer. Studies have suggested that cancer cells can manipulate the cytokine balance to their advantage, enabling them to proliferate and spread. However, scientists are now focusing on ways to exploit the body's natural immune response and use cytokines to fight the cancer cells, offering hope of a more targeted approach to cancer treatment and prevention.
