Overview
Cytokines are small proteins produced by cells of the immune system. They regulate, communicate, and coordinate the body's immune responses. Cytokines are important for proper functioning of our immune system. They help the immune system recognize, respond to, and remember foreign substances, such as bacteria and viruses. They also play a role in mediating inflammation, stimulating the production of other immune cells, and providing nutrition to cells. Dysregulation of cytokine production can lead to autoimmune diseases, allergies, and other immunologic disorders. As a result, understanding the production and regulation of cytokines is an important area of research in immunology, with potential treatments and therapies involving modulation of cytokine production.
