Overview
Social distancing is a set of non-pharmaceutical public health measures that reduce close physical contact between people in order to slow the transmission of infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The underlying principle is to limit opportunities for person-to-person spread by maintaining physical separation, restricting gatherings, and reducing movement, thereby lowering the rate at which a pathogen passes through a population. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing was applied alongside measures such as mask wearing, surface disinfection, quarantine, and lockdowns, and was a central element of efforts to manage outbreaks and protect health systems. Beyond its epidemiological role, social distancing carries important social, economic, and psychological consequences, including effects on mental health, social isolation, and the wellbeing of vulnerable groups such as older adults and people with chronic conditions. Key aspects of study include the biophysical basis of transmission and the rationale for distancing, the balance between disease control and social harm, and the broader impacts on economies and supply chains. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research reflecting these themes, including biophysical models of mask use and distancing, analyses of the rationale for distancing and surface disinfection, the mental-health effects of quarantine and isolation, and the social and economic impacts of pandemic restrictions.
