Overview
A pandemic is an outbreak of disease that spreads across multiple countries or continents, affecting a large number of people. Unlike an epidemic, which is confined to a community or region, a pandemic involves sustained transmission over a wide geographic area, as seen with the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. Pandemics place broad demands on health systems and societies, with effects extending well beyond clinical illness to economic, social, and structural dimensions. Research in the International Journal of Coronaviruses examines the COVID-19 pandemic from many angles. Studies assess the pandemic's impact on the social and economic situation in Africa and its effect on surgical practice, while others address its consequences for population structure and for persons with disabilities. Further work explores prevention and treatment-related responses, including the use of convalescent immune plasma and neutralizing antibodies, immune-modulating approaches such as interferon-gamma, and the role of telepharmacy during pandemic conditions. Together these contributions document both the wide-ranging effects of a pandemic and the scientific and public health responses to it. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to pandemics, supporting researchers, clinicians, and policymakers studying the spread, impact, and control of widespread infectious disease.
