Overview

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that affects the cells of the cervix—the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is the most common malignancy in women worldwide, and its symptoms are often hard to detect until it has advanced and become more aggressive. Early diagnosis is key for successful treatment and improved prognosis. Cervical cancer is largely preventable through regular screening tests, such as the Pap smear and HPV testing, and the HPV vaccine, which has helped to reduce both the risk and incidence of the disease. Treatment for cervical cancer can include various options such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy.
