Overview
Totipotency is the ability of a single cell to divide and develop into any other type of cell, tissue, or organ. It represents a remarkable property of some cells, allowing them to regenerate entire organs, thus providing the basis for regenerative medicine. Totipotent cells are found in the early embryo, especially the zygote and embryonic stem cells, where they are responsible for the formation of the basic body plan. As cells differentiate during development, they gradually lose the ability to form all types of cells, and eventually become restricted to fewer types. Totipotency is an important tool for scientists as it allows them to study the pathways and mechanisms of development, and to explore the possibilities for regenerative treatments. Additionally, it can be used for creating genetically modified organisms and for the production of therapeutic proteins.
