Overview

Tonicity is an important property of a solution in relation to the cells within the body, allowing for the osmotic flow of water within cells and other biological systems. It describes the ability of a solution to cause an osmotic effect and the resulting pressure it places on a cell membrane. Tonicity is important for maintaining homeostasis and for the transport of solutes, enabling the movement of water and other molecules into and out of a cell. Tonicity can be helpful for clinicians to assess hydration status and electrolyte balance in patients. Adequate management of tonicity is also essential for membrane stability and drug administration.
