Overview
Prophase is the first stage of mitosis, the process by which cells divide to form two new daughter cells. During prophase, the chromosomes condense and become visible, and the nuclear envelope breaks down. Prophase is an important step in the process of cell division, as it prepares the cell for division and ensures that the genetic material is equally distributed between the two new daughter cells. By doing so, it allows for genetic diversity and the continuation of life for organisms with complex cells.
