Overview
Phagocytes are cells that are part of the immune system and are found in the blood and other organs. They are designed to recognize, engulf and destroy bacteria and other foreign substances in the body. These cells have an important role in defending the body against infections and other illnesses. Phagocytosis, the process by which phagocytes engulf and destroy foreign matter, is an important form of protection against infection and helps to keep the body healthy. Phagocytes can also detect and remove damaged or dead cells, and play an important role in wound healing. The ability to recognize and respond to foreign matter makes phagocytes an essential part of our immune defense.
