Overview

Metaphase is a phase in the cell division process in which chromosomes align along the middle of the cell. This is a key step for the division of genetic material between daughter cells, enabling organisms to reproduce. Metaphase plays an important role in genetic stability in that it allows for accurate division of genetic material from the mother cell to the daughter cells.
