Overview
Hemocytes are immune cells which are found in some species of invertebrates, such as arthropods, mollusks and cnidarians. They are important for the protection of the host against both external and internal threats, and can be involved in cellular immunity, wound healing and the production of cytokines. Moreover, hemocytes can also help to form clots that limit the spread of pathogens, as well as acting as cellular scavengers to eliminate foreign particles. By studying hemocytes, researchers have gained a better understanding of the evolution of the immune system and how it works to protect the organism from various pathogens and environmental damage.
