Overview

Cell membranes are thin, flexible barriers made of a layer of lipids and proteins that form around the outside of a cell. These membranes are essential for a cell to survive, as they define the boundaries of the cell and control the passage of materials in and out of it. The membrane also allows cells to communicate with their environment and interact with other cells. Cell membranes are responsible for maintaining the cell’s shape, separating the cell’s contents from its surroundings, and providing a protective barrier. They also play an important role in transporting molecules across their surface, providing structure, and signaling between cells. By controlling what enters and leaves the cell, cell membranes are vital for cell functioning and life as we know it.
