Overview

Cell death and stress responses play an important role in the functioning of cells and organisms. Cell death, either through apoptosis (programmed cell death) or necrosis, is a necessary part of life. Apoptosis helps to maintain normal cellular homeostasis by removing damaged and potentially dangerous cells, while necrosis is a form of cell death that is not under the control of the cell, but is instead caused by external factors such as physical or chemical damage. Stress responses, another important factor in cell biology, are triggered when cells experience a variety of mechanical and chemical stresses that can lead to damage to the cell. Stress responses help cells to cope with these stresses and can provide protection from damage. By understanding cell death and stress responses, scientists are better able to understand how cells and organisms respond to a variety of stresses, and also gain insights into diseases such as cancer, where these processes are disrupted.
